The letter we are looking at today was written to a compromising church. They were trying to marry Christianity with the other religious beliefs of its day. It is the picture of any church that flirts with the world and tries to water down the Bible in order to accommodate other religions and mindsets of those around it. Compromise, in its essence, can seem harmless. That’s the danger of it. It often starts with a seemingly innocent choice or a minor deviation from our principles. It may be a little lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, or a slight bending of the truth to make ourselves look better in the eyes of others. I will just do it once. It won’t hurt anything. That is the reality of compromise; it starts small but can lead to devastating consequences. In this letter we see just how serious this is to Jesus.
